Design an eye-catching sticker advocating for wild salmon, using the above photograph as inspiration.

Recommended sticker size: 6 x 3 inches

Choose between the following themes:

  • Farmed salmon transmit pathogens to wild salmon

  • Sea-lice put juvenile salmon at risk

  • Warming waters affects the survival of salmon

What you’ll need:

  • 3 pieces of US Letter paper (minimum)

  • HB pencil

  • Ruler

  • Colour pencils (or something else you prefer)

  • Scanner or Adobe Illustrator (only use Illustrator if already familiar with the software)

  • US Letter label paper

  • Printer

  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Using a piece of paper and a plain pencil, draw six 6 x 3 inch boxes, splitting them into two sets of three boxes.

  2. In box 1, still only using pencil, create your first design. Use boxes 2 and 3 to further develop your design and make any adjustments or tweaks you’d like to see without deleting your previous work.

  3. Make another design concept in boxes 4 - 6.

  4. Repeat until you have at least one final design you’d like to move forward with.

  5. Draw up your final design(s) again and start adding colour. I suggest you use colour pencils, but you can choose any material you like working with.

  6. Alternatively, use Adobe Illustrator to draw up a digital version of your design, adding the colours and any adjustments you’d like to see.

  7. When you’re happy with the final design, scan it and save as a high quality PDF at 100% size. Or if using Illustrator, export it as a printable PDF.

  8. Cut out your stickers using your preferred software and fit as many to a label page as possible.

  9. Print your design on label paper and cut it out.

You’re ready to advocate for wild salmon. Congratulations! 🙌

Tips:

  • Simple is best. Your sticker needs to be eye catching from far away so don’t cram it with information and design features.

If you glance very quickly at the photograph above, which sticker of the three jumps out at you the quickest? Why do you think that is?

  • Think about what colours you’d like to use. Why have you chosen those colours? Do they make sense with your message?
